JR Giddens is Transferring
I found out via cell phone. Everyone already knows about it, but I suppose I must post away to keep the man happy. We will be losing nearly all of our scoring from last year and all starters except for Moody. It will be an eventful year, I think. We at the Phog Blog certainly do wish the best for JR and his family, and wish him a speedy recovery. I have no doubt that he will have learned some rather hard lessons in the past month and half or so, and a fresh start will likely give him a chance to apply those lessons to his life without the jeers of our Big 12 competitors, and outside of the unclosing eye of the Jayhawk fan folk.
It is a rather sad way to see it end, if indeed this is the end.
I wonder if Alex Galindo is second-guessing himself now…
Good luck JR.
I should add a special note that any comments with flaming intent will be summarily deleted. You can send me angry emails if you like about how I think I’m God or the President or something and how I have this huge power trip, but the bottom line is that you should listen to what your mom said when you were a kid - if you can’t say something nice, don’t say it.

I commend Self for making this decision. It will hurt the team next year, but will help the program in the long run.

I guess Villa had nothing to say. Anyway, I applaud Self with the honesty of his decision. Most coaches wouldn’t have the sack to do this. Most coaches would look at next year’s young team and think that they need J.R. This puts a lot of pressure on the freshmen and Sophmores next year. Also, there goes the last commendable recruit that was not Bill’s.
Good Luck team, we will cheer for you no matter what.

First, that is the first intelligent post ever by Villa. He didn’t have to spell anything!
About JR, you had to wonder if he was the kind of guy that could deal with pressure, starting with the McD All American dunk contest when he bowed out in the last round against Lebron because his foot hurt. How many high school stars would have killed for that moment and played through the pain for a chance to take down what everyone was saying was the best of the best? JR just didn’t have it in him - he’s no Carrie Strug.
His freshman year, the pressure really wasn’t on him - it was on Bill Self. The recruit everyone was worried about losing was Dave Padgent; no one seemed to care THAT much about JR. He comes off the bench that season and hits his stride in the big tourney, when nothing really was expected of him. Had he missed that three to send us into OT against GT that year, we would have still liked him. But he made it, so we fell in love with him.
The next year the pressure was on him to be our outside threat. Other teams picked up on this and actually guarded him hard out there. As the season progressed he lost more and more confidence and missed more and more shots. He didn’t know how to handle not being able to meet the heavy expectations, so he tried to just act cool out there to save dignity - in the Bucknell game it looked like he wasn’t even trying…
Then May 19th happens.
That’s how a guy falls from soon-to-be NBA highlight reel machine to a guy with a questionable future college career.
I don’t think you’ll see these issues with any of the three freshmen that we picked up this year. With the extra scholarship, if Bill can recruit well in the class of 2006, KU is going to have a very, very bright future (well, it will be bright regardless…).

I hate to see him go. I heard about the whole ordeal recently… I’ve been a KU fan my whole life (so much that I had to feel good about Roy finally getting his, cuz come on…he’s like a daddy…) and I really don’t see any reason why the spirit would diminish after this kind of event. We still got Jeff Hawkins who was there w/ Langford, Simein, Miles, and Lee…so we’ll be alright:)

dont get too angry, but im somewhat unclear about what really happend to JR that made him leave. dont get me wrong either, i am a big fan but i live up in Seattle so im not always filled in on the jayhawk news, so if someone could help out, that would be awesome.
