Morningstar Commits
Brady Morningstar, a former Lawrence Free State High School basketball standout, will play hoops with the Jayhawks after a year at prep school. He gave Coach Self the commitment over the weekend.
It is clear that Morningstar is not yet ready to play at KU’s level, but hopefully a year of prep school and additional high-level competition will help him improve. A year of maturity will help as well.
When I first heard the news, I wondered whether Morningstar will be a recruited walk on or scholarship player. The initial articles have not answered this question for me. Considering the interest he had from mid-major programs before deciding to go the prep school route, I have to think that he’ll be a scholarship player. Turgeon at Wichita State was all over this kid, but he has always said, from day one, that he wanted to be a Jayhawk.
It’s always good to have players with heart and loyalty, and Morningstar has loads of both. Still, I don’t know what to think about this move. Morningstar is a good player, but . . . Well I’m sure that Self and his staff know what they’re doing.

You don’t know what to think about this move? If he is as good as his dad, as has been reported, you’re gonna love it. I’ll take a Roger Morningstar on my team anytime, anywhere, against anybody.

I couldn’t agree more. I would love for Brady to be the second coming of Roger Morningstar, and I hope that’s how it works out.
My concern is that he hasn’t played against high-level competition in high school, and his performances with KC Pump N’ Run have not generated terriffic reports. Wichita State was chasing this in-stater, but that hardly makes him ready to play high-level D1 ball. Also, he will attend prep school at New Hampton, not exactly the most prestigious spot for him to land.
The positives are there - the kid has heart and loyalty to the program. He also sounds like a very mature young man, able to self-evaluate and recognize the importance of prep school. I’ve heard that he is not done growing, which can only be a positive thing. He will get stronger, bigger, smarter, and more skilled over the course of the next year.
One thing we know for sure, Self and company have a proven track record for talent evaluation. Maybe they’ve found a diamond in the rough.

You had better hope they found a diamond in the rough, with the extreme lack of scholarships available for the stars coming in on Late Night.

Ditto, Jeff. Ditto!

Don’t worry bout the scholarship situation. Brady deserves a scholarship and he will show all haters/doubters sooner than later. Wright or Rush will be out after next year, the scholly situation should be the least of everyone’s worries.

Brady Morningstar is expected to be a scholarship athlete for the Jayhawks during the 2006-2007 season, according to rivals.com.

Wright or Rush leaving doesn’t help us land recruits. The fact that a late scholarship might come open as the result of an early departure won’t help us land the recruits coming to visit on October 14. To them, we’re full when we’re full. Why take a chance on us when they all have multiple bona fide scholarship offers from top-flight programs.
I hope that Brady Morningstar turns into a good player for KU down the road, and I’m supremely confident in Self’s ability to evaluate talent, but I question the timing of this move with so many excellent, proven prospects seemingly very interested in joining our group of talented young hoopsters.

new hampton prep may not be one of the best prep schools, but they certainly have a strong team. They have a strong frontcourt and backcourt. Brady and Pat Dame will be a force to be wreckoned with. I saw this kid Pat play recently and im sure he will be getting looks from a number of schools. He is strong with the ball and can score at will, he has great court vision and distributes the ball great. The frontcourt on New Hampton speaks for itself, two kids that are both going D1 along with a strong bench should result in a great season

hey josh where are you from and who are you? I saw the kid Pat Dame play at st andrews and against patterson he looked really good. He is a mid major player i would say. He scored 10 straight points and had some nice passes and di not get picked once by the quikd gaurds of patterson. New hampton lost to the number one team in teh nation by 10. BRADY is the real deal also. HATERS
