Whitlock Assesses KU
Jason Whitlock of the KC Star has an insightful take on the lineup issues Bill Self is dealing with this season:
The problem is Kansas doesn’t have two stars. The Jayhawks have a potentially outstanding freshman in Brandon Rush (12 points, seven rebounds) and an athletic and inconsistent sophomore in C.J. Giles (17 points, nine rebounds, five blocks).
Self doesn’t know what he’s going to get from Giles or Rush night in and night out, which accentuates the inconsistency of the rest of Kansas’ inexperienced talent, which hampers Self’s ability to determine a playing rotation.

I like Jason Whitlock’s insight for the most part. However, I do take exception to his interpretation that C.J. Giles is more dependable and well thought of than Sasha Kaun. He did not do the research to discover that Sasha Kaun had the flu during the Kansas Versus California game in Kansas City. Also, he mentioned the season averages of Brandon Rush, however Jason Witlock forgot to look up Sasha Kaun’s season averages.

How did “Whitlock” and “insightful” get in the same sentence?

Jason gets lazy upon occasion, especially when he wants to make a point… Also, I’m not sure I agree with him that Rush is a “one and done” guy. Brandon is hardly performing like a first-round pick right now. Unless his game gains dramatically, he seems like a 2-yr college player to me.

Remember when Jason Whitlock did nothing but praise Roy Williams’ Kansas program. Roy gave him tons of access and in return, rarely read a negative comment out of Whitlock. Since then, Whitlock seems to have forgotten that Roy is not the only succesful coach in the storied history of this program. These things I know: we won before Roy and will win after him. We are now into the third season of Jayhawk bashing by Whitlock. Hopefully, he will eventually accept that Self is a good coach, as his resume shows. Besides, it isn’t like the program, especially the underclassman roster, was in perfect shape when Self took over.
