Self Hints At Offense
The LJW site has an article up in which Bill Self seems to imply that he’s found ‘the solution’ to the team’s offensive woes:
“We have to be really good at something and have something we can hang our hat on. We think we know what it is. We need to get really good at it and the players believe they can score out of it whenever we run it.”
Additional commentary from Self implies that he is pushing the team to run, run, run. If this scenario were to actually materialize, there would be a lot of enthusiastic fans around here. But can a team this young handle the demands of a fast-paced offense? Bill Self is probably asking himself this very question. Any thoughts?

Without a doubt this team should be running. Self REALLY needs to establish a set lineup also. This is how I would dish out minutes…
Starting:
Chalmers - 20-25 min/game
Robinson - 25 min/game
Rush - 30 min/game
Moody - 15 min/game
Kaun - 25 min/game
Bench:
Wright - 20 min/game
Giles - 20 min/game
Downs - 15-20 min/game
Hawkins - 10 min/game
Stewart - 10 min/game
Jackson - 5-10 min/game
We have a ton of depth and it is all young so why limit ourselves to 9, I say play 11, let everybody develop and just play the hot hands for the night. Moody is poise and understands the game so well that he starts, for now, but Wright and Giles end up getting more minutes…
Chalmers gets the nod with Robinson as combo guards and even though I love Vinson he ends up going back to his scrub minutes role. Anyone agree?

A running offense couldn’t be any worse.

Am I an optimist or a pessimist if I say the offense has looked better than I expected?

I sense some disillusionment there, Jeff. For myself, seeing a legit running team on the floor would go a long way toward making this season a success. Purely an aesthetic preference? Maybe, but I’m not ready to concede yet.
Joe, Im down with your lineup for the most part. Who wouldn’t want Chalmers to start? Whether he can cut his turnovers remains to be seen.
I’m not ready to give a starting slot to Moody just yet. I’d much rather see Jackson take that position, and provide some offensive firepower to go with a brusing defensive presence.

This team is one of the fastest and deepest in memory–so of course they need to run. They are also the best fast-break defending team I have seen in four decades. Chalmers is a huge part of that. But the lineup must play to strengths; there is a fast, guard dominated line-up that is great at shooting freethrows led by Chalmers and Rush, and a slower half court team led by Vinson and Moody. This team’s biggest problem has been nerves and too many kids with talent. ..

Big fan of this blog. I love the idea of opening things up. As Self pointed out it takes advantage of the qualities this team posseses, namely althleticism. Giles does not have the post game needed to anchor the offense, but he seems to excel when he gets to use his athleticism. As the year develops we will necessarily develop a better half court game as everyone gains experience, and then next season we should have a more lethal half court attack, but for now I think we should play to our strengths.
