KU-ISU Postgame Thoughts

Our guard production continues to impress me.� Self’s move of Ruh-Roh to point was inspired - I say it again.� 59 points, great outside shooting, and merciless defense.
Good guard play and great defense will make us a tough out in the NCAA tournament.
We have a very realistic shot at 12-4 in the conference, and a 5-7 seed in the tourney doesn’t seem out of the question.
We’ll need more post production in order to really excel, but I like what I’m seeing
I may add more later, but I’d love to hear what people think!

I think the most exciting thing about the Jayhawks play of late is the emergence of Mario Chalmers. This kid is coming into his own and while he had 6 more TO’s today, 21 points and 6 steals isn’t too shabby. He’s light years ahead of where he was early in the season. KU needed him to get it going in the backcourt and I think teams are going to have to show a little more respect for the guards from here out. Guard play isn’t everything in the NCAA Tournament but it’s important…this is a BIG step forward.

You can really tell the difference when Rus Rob is not on the floor was one big observation that I had. I also am starting to feel comfortable with the crazy back and forth game that we play…..I was definately impressed with the second half where we finally decided to focus and not turn the ball over every other time down and I am loving watching our guys step to the line and nail thier free throws. Overall I give them a 7 out of 10 on the performance today and the offense is really cominging around….Can someone tell Julian to slow down and just reverse the ball if he dosn’t have anything!!!!!!!

Well, I must say we have one hell of a backcourt. Robinson, Chalmers, and Rush is almost unfair for other opponents to play. They are all averaging double digits in big 12 play, and have been playing killer perimeter defense. Inside, Jackson and Wright are starting to turn it on. Jackson is a pitbull and Wright is soooooo long and really a mismatch on offense and defense. Kaun would be good if his head wasn’t on backwards. He is so strong and big. Countless times, the ball hits him right in the hands and he panics. I have seen a lot of improvement from last year though. He has shown improvement. If Giles can get his head on, and Vinson, Case, and Moody can be productive in the little time that they are in… There is no reason we can’t go deep in the NCAA tourney, because we will make it.

Matt makes a good point about Kaun being much improved though not yet a good player. If Jackson and Wright can consistently be the top two frontcourt players, Kaun’s production is more than sufficient for a third big man.

As for the team as a whole, they are playing much better offensively than I ever expected to see this year despite the inexplicable stretches of calamity they create every game. I’m not sure they took five bad shots this afternoon. It was all open looks or terible passes.

I thought the defense was okay as well today (kudos especially to Rush for his work on Stinson after Robinson picked up his third foul). Iowa State is a good offensive team and took advantage of Kansas’ poor situational play late in the game to sneak over the 1 point per possession threshold.

Robinson’s import to the team was clear in the difference between how Hawkins and Moody looked in the first half when Robinson was on the bench (horrible) and how they looked in the second half playing alongside Robinson (decent bench players). Russell’s greatly improved his own play and makes his teammates better.

Keep in mind you played one of the worst defensive teams nationally. We regularly make opponents look like JJ Redick. That being said, that 67% in the second half is sickening.

Completely agree on the Russell Robinson comments. He seems to be the glue that is keeping this team together. He needs to be on the floor, or this team seriously struggles.

Micah Downs should have taken notes from Russell’s past, as he was also considering a transfer out of the program at the end of last season, but he stayed. Now he’s quite possibly the most improved and most important player on the team. Amazing what a little patience and great work effort will get you…
