KU - OSU Postgame
Well, that was pretty ugly. Really ugly. Really really really ugly.
But we won.
Why is it that teams from Oklahoma play so ugly?
I’m miffed. I thought our defense was good, but I thought we really had trouble executing for such a long part of the game. That had a lot to do with the fact that Robinson and Wright were out for the end of the first half when we let them back into the game.
Curry had a good game and I’m betting that Hoopinion’s stats will show that he was more productive than usual.
Speaking of productive, Brandon Rush had 9 shots in 39 minutes. Marcus Dove is a good defender, but I’m betting he could have gotten more shots.
It’s really nice to be able to see KU’s scores on ESPN’s scoreboard without having to dig through the (almost entirely subscription) site to get to the Big 12 scores.
We outrebounded them 40-25.
We had 16 steals.
Overall, I’m pretty pleased with this win. Once again, this team has shown that over the course of 40 minutes, we’re very hard to beat. We just pulled away in the end once they got worn down. I think we’ll see at least one tournament game when a team tries to make it ugly - and succeeds for 32 minutes -but loses by 10. Another solid win for the Baby Jays. Vegas and all the Power Ratings were suggesting a 3-4 point win, and we pull away by 15.
Despite how ugly the game was played and how much the referees sucked the momentum right out of the game, I’m smiling like a guy who just watched the Jayhawks win by 15 in Stillwater.
I mean seriously, if I had told you we won by 15, would you be happy or not?
Can I get a Witness?

witness.
i take your point on russell. i don’t think he played badly, but he did miss a few easy lay ups. and he also wasn’t hitting his free throws — which is uncharacteristic. he can get to the basket on anyone. here’s hoping he starts finishing some of those drives.

Russell may be taking Self’s advice to be more agressive in getting to the hoop and drawing contact. I think that will be a very important skill come tourney time and I’m betting he gets a little better at finishing soon enough.
We had 5-6 baskets roll off the rim after all.
The great thing to me is that even at less than 100%, this team is still improving, and I for one welcome our ability to win these games.

I will give credit to Oklahoma State… they are as athletic as KU. While they don’t have the talent, they make it hard for teams to finish around the rim. Some of the missed layups were headscratchers but there were a lot of shots inside 8 feet that they just altered or blocked.

In my preview, I clearly overestimated Kansas’ ability to make layups.
Congrats to the Cowboys on an uncharacteristically strong defensive performance, but they are a bad offensive team. A big part of the problem is that they played 4-on-5 most of the night. Dove has attempted only four shots in the four conference games he’s played (and he’s playing over 30 minutes per game). He can’t be a good enough defender to compensate for that.

We should have won by more, but it was nice to see OSU’s very well executed plan to drag the game into the trenches did not work - they just got stuck in the trenches.
My hunch is that we’ll see a mirror of this game in the NCAA tournament, and that we’ll be glad that we have this one in the pocket.

Sloppy play in my opinion. We were lucky that Julian Wright decided to step it up a notch and get the game going. Brandon Rush was non-existent in the first half. Jeff Hawkins is in there for purely defensive purposes. At least when he goes to foul he goes strong!
Im glad we won by 15 points. Another road win helps our case. However, turnovers are going to catch up with us eventually. And I hope its before the big 12 tourney or the big dance..I dont want a one and done again this year.

Great win, again, finally, kind of…. This is starting to feel a lot like it did last year when we started the season winning (someone help me w/ the exact number) tons of games in a row - then we collided with Villanova and never were the same. We’re on a win streak, but it’s also turning into an “ugly game” streak.
Hopefully this is different because that was a senior laiden team - but remember Bill Self’s quote after the Villanova game, “We had that one coming”. Hopefully we turn things around before Texas - let’s avoid the Bucknell collision course this time. We should be getting better with every game this time of year, not worse (even if our starting point was far below where we are now).
