The Decade of the Hawk

Travis Robinett of the UDK says to start saving your money: Those SI Commemorative Editions are not cheap.

With the recruits he’ll bring in, Kansas coach Bill Self, who should be strongly considered for national coach of the year, is about to change those perceptions and put Kansas basketball back where it belongs in the media’s eyes.

Within the next 10 years, the Jayhawks will win at least two national titles. We’ll see how they’re perceived then.

Luckily writers of the UDK aren’t biased.

It’s good to set the expectations as high as possible so that we’re not disappointed… wait a tick!

Soren Petro said nearly the same thing today.

It’s hard to argue with Robinett’s point really, except based on history.

    And yet…

UConn has brought in a couple of championships, as have Kentucky and Duke and North Carolina.

    Just follow the talent.

Self has proven himself a recruiter without peer and I would give him even odds of winning a championship in the next ten years, and I wouldn’t bet against his winning two.

    Why would I?

As likely as it seems that KU will win a national title soon, I wish we could just get it over with. It seems like we are due to win it the next time we get a final four, so hopefully that will be within the next 3 years.

    CF,

I sat 20 rows back on an April night in 2003 and watched free throw after free throw clank off the rim - it’s just a matter of time really, and hopefully sooner rather than later.

  6. Jeff Says:

It’ll happen someday, but let’s not get too caught up with that pie in the sky that we don’t appreciate the ride we’re on…

i hate to say it, but i have to agree with espn — we are still on the bubble. we have only one quality win, really, against oklahoma. given how bad kentucky’s been, they don’t count, as far as i’m concerned.

and all of our losses are bad ones : arizona, arkansas, nevada, st. joes, k. state, and mizzou. that’s not exactly a list of quality opponents.

  8. nychawk Says:

i guess i’ll also throw in colorado and cal in the quality win category. but that’s being generous, i think.

of course, that being said, we do have some advantages:

-Big 12 runner-up (assuming we don’t win it outright)
-19-3 down the strecth (assuming we lose to UT and win out otherwise)
-a ton of traditional powers on the bubble that haven’t been playing well at all lately (UK, Maryland, the entire Big 10, Syracuse, Wake, etc.)

but the biggest disadvantage is our lack of respect from the national media types. a signature win against texas would go a long way to providing that exposure.

I don’t see how KU is on the bubble at this point. I suppose if we lost every game from here on out, we would quickly lose the ground that we’ve made up, but outside of a total collapse, we’ll have a decent seed in the tournament.

Cal and at CU are definitely quality wins, and Nevada, Arkansas and Arizona are not bad losses. All stand a good chance of making the tournament. Mizzou, KSU and St. Joe’s I’ll give you, but this team is much better for its early season struggles and I think that it won’t at all be a fluke if they make the Sweet 16.

A win at UT would certainly help.

you’re right on the nevada, arkansas, and arizona losses. but i still think we have more “bad” losses than “quality” wins. if you’ve seen this team play, you know how good they’ve been over the last two months. but if you just look at the schedule, and you’re a tough grader, you could make a case that they’re “on the bubble.”

i guess it all depends on how you define “on the bubble.” my own ultra-pessimistic defintion is: “on the bubble” = team that hasn’t yet won a conference or conference tourney title. of course, by that definition, everyone is on the bubble at this point.

realistically, i can’t see any way we miss the dance. but you never really know until you see your name on an official, selection comittee-approved bracket.

  11. Jeremy Chrysler Says:

By that definition, we’re on the bubble, but I think we’re safely in at this point barring something insane happening.

2/25 could be a really big day though to improve perception, irrespective of whether we win or lose.

This is from ESPN’s Weekly Watch:

Kansas: The Jayhawks are rolling. They swept through Nebraska on the road and Iowa State at home to stay within one game of first-place Texas in the Big 12. Kansas once had the look of a bubble team and now is looking at a high NCAA seed. Bill Self has done his best coaching job in his brief KU tenure.

Should we stil assume that he’s going to disappoint us eventually?

  14. Mark Says:

KU is not in any way on the bubble. What happened in Novemebr and December will have little effect on the Selection Committee. They will be much more interested in what we have done lately–and we will go into Selection Sunday anywhere between 12-2 and 16-0 since the Mizzou game in Columbia. If it’s 12-2, meaning we lose our first Big 12 tourney game, it will affect our seed, but won’t cost us a spot in the tourney.
