Richard Roby, Thomas Gardner to test the draft

As the Big 12 North continues to dissolve before our eyes, I wonder to myself, “Do we benefit at all from the continued mediocrity of our former Big 8 comrades?”

I can’t see how we do. The South will rise again next year, with the emergence of young A&M, OSU and Baylor teams, and the North is only getting weaker. Plus, half of the North will be playing with new coaches next year. New and better coaches will help in the long term, i think, but next year will be interesting to say the least.

MU and Huggins

I suggested Huggins to MU back in October, but I didn’t think it would happen. Now we find out that some of MU’s boosters are all over Huggins, and some want to keep their distance. Sunvold is apparently upset that neither Huggins nor Majerus received an interview for the Mizzou job. I don’t know what Mizzou expects, but as long as there’s such a disunity between what the University wants and what the Athletic Department wants (reading between the lines there’s a huge schism here), Mizzou’s big money sports will continue to be mired in mediocrity.

But keep it quiet, because I would hate to see Mizzou get wise to their foolishness.

A snippet on Gardner
:

Junior guard Thomas Gardner declared that he’s entering the June 27 NBA draft and foregoing his senior season. He said he will not hire an agent at this time, which would enable him to maintain eligibility for his final season at MU if he chooses to withdraw his name from draft consideration.

I heard on the radio that Gardner is doing the same thing as Roby

ESPN is reporting that Steve Alford will be interviewed by Mizzou, after Indiana apparently abandoned the idea of hiring him. I am puzzled by the motivation he might have for what is at best a sideway move to a place like Columbia with a fractured Athletic Department. Could be that a lot more cash is at stake, but it seems to me he runs the risk of running his career into the ground. Understandable why a mid-major coach would want the challenge, but someone who is already leading a good program like Iowa has no business even visiting Mizzou.

Wow, I hadn’t heard that. Bravo, I cry from a mile West of State Line! Alford is my man for the job.

  4. Chalmersfan Says:

    Seriously?
Because Alford is like Quin only with worse offense and better defense, and he’s a worse recruiter.

I’m for Alford because I don’t think he’ll be able to improve Missouri’s lot.

Indeed, the impatient fan base will demand satisfaction immediately and the only person that will do that will have to bring in some stellar recruits.

But Alford won’t come to Mizzou. The Des Moines Register says that he’ll not even interview:

“They called and notified me they’d like to talk with Steve and I noted their interest,” Bowlsby said. “That’s all there was to it.”

Iowa sports information department officials indicated, however, that a press release will be distributed this afternoon, saying Alford is not interviewing for the Tigers’ job.

Missouri’s situation is now lugubrious… next time a Missouri fan brings up Bucknell or Bradley remind him/her that their team finished 11th in the league and is now coachless. I’m hoping that Huggins goes to KSU just to embarass them even more.

    Yep. Mizzou is Fizzouked.
