Goodbye Mangino?

I loved the way your teams fought. I loved the spirit of your teams.

But you cannot justify giving away on silver platters four games. If you survive this season I will be surprised. If you can, please learn from your mistakes.

Please be humble and open your mind to the fact that maybe your game decisions aren’t working.

4 games this year that we have given away.

Am I wrong here?

I learned something about college football this year- when your team isn’t one the big boys, you better have a good defense or a good (and not just resilient coach).

Otherwise your team is just another team with some offensive weapons and a mediocre defense.

Mangino deserves a bit of slack- he’s been shuffling between an injured freshman and a lead-footed crapp veteran at quarterback, and the wide receivers have been young and bad.

But Mangino, a defensive coach, hasn’t taken ownership of the defense. He’s got a strong and fast defense and what happens? They don’t put pressure on opposing quarterbacks, they aren’t consistent against the run, and there’s broken coverages all over the place. And he didn’t really seem to do all he could to get Charles Gordon to stay.

I say after the season hire some well-known defensive coordinator to be the new coach.

Didn’t Perkins just give Mangino an extension a month or so ago? I think it’d be hard to fire him with loads of money still due to him.

But I agree completely that we’ve given away 4 games, 5 if you count Nebraska. Calling the defense mediocre is too nice. Mediocre defenses don’t give up four touchdown leads.

All along, I’ve felt this would be a bit of a step back for KU with so many defensive studs graduating last year. I was hoping for six wins plus a bowl. Now I hope they can win another game.

Brent Musberger makes a point out of introducing Texas Defensive Coordinator Gene Chizik as a future head coach in every ‘Horns game he does. Is that something you’d be interested in?

Under the new contract, Mangino can still be fired with no money due to him at the end of this season only, due to the probation that KU is now on.

I think he gets another year. Mangino has raised the program’s talent-level in a short period of time. It’s been a long time since we had a football team good enough to underachieve.

Though I think the team’s offensive philosophy/play-calling has not been as succesful as it could in protecting a young defensive unit, there have been a number of key drops, fumbles, and interceptions for which the blame must go to the players involved.
