Recap: Kansas 97 Kansas St 70

Team eFG% OR% TO% FT Rate FT% PPP
KSU 43.5 19.4 19.7 65.2 73.2 0.99
KU 59.6 50.0 15.2 23.5 66.7 1.34

Some superlatives…

Most efficient offensive game of the year? Check. 1.34 points per possession. Kansas State couldn’t match the defensive performance delivered by Winston-Salem State, Dartmouth, or Tennessee State in Allen Fieldhouse.

Best rebounding performance? Check, though it takes a bit of argument. Last night Kansas got half (50%!) of the possible offensive rebounds and 80.6% of the possible defensive rebounds. The Jayhawks had a higher percentage of defensive rebounds two games ago in Lincoln but, unlike the Cornhuskers, Kansas State was attempting to get offensive rebounds. (Though, in Young Mr. Bennett’s case, any basketball-related effort appears to be nothing more than a petulance delivery system.)

Fewest turnovers? Close enough for me. The Jayhawks turned it over on just 15.2% of their possessions. Again, this performance puts Kansas State in amusing company: Winston-Salem State (Kansas TO% against: 13.8) and Rhode Island (Kansas TO% against: 14.9).

I don’t think there’s anything not to like about last night’s performance. True, Kansas State shot and made a bunch of free throws, but that had quite a bit to do with Jermaine Maybank and Cartier Martin realizing that Kansas State’s only hope to score against the KU defense was to draw contact and get to the free throw line. My well of pessimism has, for now, run dry.

Let’s hope to witness something similar in Columbia.

Bennett (or Benneck due to his 3 foot long neck) is the worst D1 player I have ever seen. I wish there were more KSU fans at my work so I could make that photo of him hounding the ref my desktop wallpaper.

    0 points, 0 boards, 5 fouls in 11 minutes.

I think the only reason he starts is to win the tip and he can’t even do that.

If KU wins a title in the next 3 years, it will be because of Sherron Collins. He is fantastic. During the A&M game when they showed Law’s scoring progression for each year (something like 7.6, 12, 17, 20.5), I thought that’s exactly what Collins’ would look like.

Nice to see them roll over KState, especially after ESPN had a piece on the Wildcats being on a roll and tough team last week. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the game, but from the score, it doesn’t seem like there are any complaints (except maybe not reaching 100). ESPN’s highlights featured Rush, but they tend to do that.

Anyway, it should be interesting to see how they react on the road in the next three out of four games.

Peter, Kenny Cooper sort of outdid Bennett last night: 0 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks, 0 shot attempts, and 0 fouls in 18 minutes.

I obviously wasn’t watching that game last night, but how can that happen?

  4. Peter Says:

Yeah, but did he constantly sneer at the officials?

I gotta say Cooper’s line is worse. At least pick up a ticky tack foul or turn the ball over just to have a “1″ somewhere in there.

That was a great all around game last night, and honestly, it’s how I expected them to bounce back after a tough loss. That’s the way elite teams respond to a loss like that, and I still believe Kansas is one of those teams. I see a big drop after about the top 8 or 9 teams in the country (with KU and A&M included in those 8 or 9). I think sometimes we don’t give enough credit to this team when they play well, at least not as much as we rip on them when they lose or don’t play well. I get as frustrated as anybody at times, but let’s not let those few bad moments fog up our view of what is a really good team and CAN be a great team. Great win.

At the same time, I think we all realize that you can’t have a loss in the NCAA Tournament to make you mad and play with a chip on your shoulder. So lets see if KU can play like that consistently without needing a reminder via a loss.

On another note, did anyone else see the guy in the front row of the student’s section? He stood there the whole game with a frown on his face and his arms crossed. You could see him in a couple of shots, including Julian Wright’s alley-oop and Sherron Collins’ great behind the back dribble and dish to Chalmers for 2. This guy never cracked a smile or raised his hands to clap. Seriously dude, call me up and I’ll be happy to sit in the front row.

    Rock Chalk!
