Recap: Kansas 71 Kansas State 62
It was a sad night for Kansas State fans, all of whom suffered the 24th consecutive loss to the Jayhawks in Manhattan came at the end. For at least three of those fans, that sadness bracketed the emptiness that engulfed them during the player introductions at the instant necessity dicatated removing the live chicken from their pants and throwing it on the floor.
| Team | eFG% | OR% | TO% | FT Rate | FT% | PPP |
| KU | 56.1 | 40.7 | 24.3 | 32.7 | 59.3 | 1.08 |
| KSU | 38.7 | 32.6 | 13.7 | 22.6 | 70.0 | 0.94 |
I was right to predict that Kansas couldn’t shoot 60% from the field and grab 50% of their offensive rebound opportunities. Shooting 56% from the field and grabbing 40% of possible offensive rebounds is a lovely consolation prize. Shooting 56% from the field while missing more than three-quarters of their three-point attempts and scoring 1.08 points per possession while missing more than three-quarters of their three-point attempts and turning the ball over on almost a quarter of their possessions is the latest example that this may, in fact, be a pretty good offensive team.
The Jayhawks didn’t force many turnovers but unlike earlier in the year (@Iowa State, Missouri), they appeared content to let Kansas State dribble from sideline to sideline behind the three-point line before attempting a contested shot. They were few dumb fouls and very little dribble penetration allowed until the final minute when Clent Stewart’s running one-handers were considered a lesser evil than letting anyone throw up a three-pointer.
Having spent the morning enlightening strangers about the glories of Sherron Collins (I contend he resembles no recent Kansas player more than Paul Pierce shrunk down to a square, 5′ 9″ frame.), I’ll allow myself one final marvel: Last night was Sherron Collins having a good half.

Is there any reason that Huggins was dressed like a magician? Too bad he can’t make his DUi disappear. (Ziiiinnnnnnnnggg)
or was he a blackjack dealer?

Taking into account location and opponent ratings, Kansas played like a team with adjusted offense/defense/Pythagorean ratings of:
121.9/83.4/.9875
That’s equivalent to the full year stats of…
offense - #5 (UNC)
defense - #4 (UConn)
overall - #2 (Kansas)
Shooting 56% from the field while missing more than three-quarters of their three-point attempts … is the latest example that this may, in fact, be a pretty good offensive team.
They were 20/28 from inside the arc. 71%! Yikes

20/28 means the offense is generally getting good looks. You don’t make that many jump shots.
Admittedly, KSU is undersized, but with Julian and Darrell as our bigs for much of the game, we weren’t exactly big.
And with as many threes attempted, rebounding yesterday was just as much about hustle and speed as size.
DH, how do you calculate pythagorean rating from offensive / defensive efficiency. I think it would be useful to chart out our PR, AOE and DOE in a spreadsheet so that we could graph it visually and overlay the Hawks versus the other teams in the top 10 / 15.
If you’ve got the data, I don’t mind making it graphical.

You are correct in saying that Collins resembles no previous Jayhawk. I’ve lived in Detroit for the last 6 years, and Collins is the Chauncy Billups of KU (man did that guy hurt us at Colorado). If Collins can be taught to run the point like Chauncy, we’ll be unstopable. Rock Chalk from MI.

Jeremy, the formula for the Pythagorean rating is:
AdjOffEff^11.5
———————————-
(AdjOffEff^11.5 + AdjDefEff^11.5)
I’ve got most of the data needed for what you’re talking about. When I get home from work tonight, I’ll take a look and see what I can whip up.

I still think that the thing that is going to beat this team in the tournament is horrible free throw shooting. to be a top tier team we have to make free throws

thanks dh. if you’ve got it in xls or csv, just pop it to me via email. i don’t want to put you out to whip up line graphs unless you would enjoy doing so.
I just think it’s a little easier to see trajectory when looking at a ranking (or a pyth rating) relative to what it has been.

Have you ever seen a small guy use his body in the paint like Sherron? He also used both hands extremely well last night on his runners.
dominatindj11 could be right. Depending on what type of game we are forced to play, KU could be in trouble if we play a deep front court. Julian, Sasha, Darnell, and Darrell haven’t gotten it done from the charity stripe. For issue with this, see KU vs. Syracuse. I guess we can always post up Sherron!

Thought you all would be amused by something Scott Van Pelt said tonight on SportsCenter, while recapping the Kentucky game… “And KU rolls… I mean UK… KU, that would be Kansas… have to be careful, those people come find you” Ha! Maybe ESPN is getting the message?
