Question for those statistically inclined
Pomeroy’s ratings of the conferences place the Big 12 last out of the BCS conferences, but still well above any of the mid majors. After a cursory review, it looks like Colorado is way way worse than any other team in any BCS conference. How does Pomeroy calculate conference PR? I averaged the ratings earlier and didn’t get his number. What happens to the Big 12 if we remove CU?

Absolutely no clue. Just tried harmonic mean, central mean, geometric mean, none of those seemed to be it. He’s pretty good about answering questions, you might try emailing him.

I think he’s taking the sum of each teams AdjO and AdjD the putting it through the Pythagorean Calculation. After doing this I come up with .8841 which is within rounding error of his published .8839.
Assuming this methodology and removing CU, the Big XII would have an approximate Pomeroy = .9050. Which would put them in a stastical tie with the SEC and Big Ten.

I suppose to get a real answer, you’d have to subtract out CU’s contributions to the other teams’ AOE and ADE, but that’s close enough, I would guess, not to make TOO big of difference.

I’m with Gerred.
I just plugged the AdjO & AdjD numbers, and used his announced exponent of 11.5. Most of my team Pythagoreans were within .0001, which could be rounding or could be missing digits on the AdjO/D numbers. Averaging the results, I hit his conference number to four decimal places. Taking out the Buffs I get .9048 (working with data one day older).
Of course, Rutgers is doing a similar number on the Big East. KenPom has them 13 places higher, and they are only 1/16th of the total instead of 1/12th. But they are still not doing their league any favors in the rankings.

This is all well and good, but take out the weakest team in every BCS conference and I would bet the B12 would be last again.

Conf … Rating … Rating w/o worst team
ACC … 0.9285 … 0.9373
SEC … 0.9081 … 0.9174
B10 … 0.9066 … 0.9209
BgE … 0.8902 … 0.9048
B12 … 0.8842 … 0.9046
P10 … 0.8825 … 0.9022
So the only one really hurt by its lowliest team, rankwise, is the Big 10.
