BCS Possibilities?
Still looking good I think. So does Stewart Mandel
Despite suffering its first loss against Missouri, 11-1 Kansas still seems like a solid bet to garner an at-large berth to the Fiesta Bowl. The fifth-ranked Jayhawks would be an obvious replacement if the Tigers move up to the title game. If that happens the Fiesta wouldn’t have qualms with an Oklahoma-Kansas matchup since the teams did not meet during the regular season.
Did anyone realize that KU has a basketball team and that it is in the top 5 and is undefeated? Wow.
UPDATE: Jerry Palm is of like mind.
“I’m trying to think of how you get to four at-large teams that don’t include Kansas,” said Jerry Palm, who studies the BCS and runs collegebcs.com. “I haven’t come up with a scenario where that happens yet.”
If OU wins, KU will probably slip in. If Mizzou wins, KU will definitely be in.

Stewart is a little off there…under that scenario of Missouri in the national title game, we would not be able to play Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl; no conference can have more than two teams in the BCS. My guess is that Oklahoma beats Missouri and they both end up in BCS games while we go to the Cotton Bowl. Our shot at a BCS game is still there if Missouri wins, but who wants to root for that?

If OU wins, we’ve got a decent chance of being ranked higher in the BCS than them. If we’re in the top 4 of the BCS, we have to go to a BCS bowl.
I don’t think we’d be higher in the polls than Mizzou, but I do think that our computer ranking would get us where we need to be, more likely than not.
I think Mandel may have confused the two scenarios:
1. MU beats OU and we pick up at large against someone in Fiesta Bowl as second Big 12 team.
2. OU beats MU, dropping MU enough in BCS that we skip over them and play OU in Fiesta bowl.

As disappointing as the loss Saturday night was, a Kansas football season that ends with the worst-case scenario being an invite to the Cotton Bowl must be deemed a delightful success.

If Pittsburgh beats West Virginia I think Kansas has a very good chance to jump into the top 4 in the BCS thanks to the computers. Or, as Jeremy pointed out, we might jump into the top 4 with a Missouri loss to OU. If Missouri beats OU, Kansas will almost certainly get the big 12 spot in the Fiesta bowl. At any rate, I think there are still several ways KU can be playing in a BCS game which is an unbelievable success for this program.
