Who Gave Kansas a 25th Place Vote?

I’ve spent a day and a half trying to figure this out and I have failed to do so. This link lists the voters but still shows their pre-season ballots. Should this turn out to be a bandwagon-type season, I wanted to give credit to the media member who bought the first ticket.

Speculation: I figure Tom Keegan’s the most likely choice with Mike DeArmond edging out Chris Fowler as the least likely.

UPDATE: Cheers to gratefultyler for correcting my above snarky assumption. Media ticket #1 on the Kansas Football Bandwagon goes to Mike DeArmond, Missouri beat writer for The Kansas City Star.

More Hardware for the Baby Jays

Yet more trophies for the Jayhawks, and hopefully, our boys won’t need to sell them like Bjorn Borg is selling his Wimbledon hardware.

A hint to Brandon Rush and all of the Jayhawk fans who are disappointed he didn’t make First Team all Big 12 from the AP:

Opposing coaches want him to leave. That’s why they say things like “he’s a pro,” and that’s why they voted him First Team All B12. I think you can make an argument that he belongs there, but he wouldn’t be on my first team. Not this year anyhow.

An AP Voter sees the light, and it’s shining Crimson and Blue

An interesting insight into the mind of an AP voter - Jerry Brewer of the Louisville Courier Journal.

You have to like everything about Kansas. Coach Bill Self has made this into one of the nation’s best defensive teams. The Jayhawks hold opponents to 36.1 percent shooting. They have size. They have good shooters. They can overwhelm you athletically (ask Kentucky).

There’s a whole lot more there, so definitely check it out. If KU plays well on Saturday, I think that a lot more people will be thinking like Jerry.

Bilas: Bill Self is Coach of the Year Candidate

Personally, I find the subtle but dramatic transition from free to subscription that ESPN has made over the last 24 months a little bit irritating, but there’s some stuff in there that’s probably worth subscribing for (when the ESPN talking heads aren’t yammering on endlessly about the wondrous splendor that is East Coast Basketball), and this is some of that.

Coach of the Year:

It seems accepted that Bruce Pearl and John Thompson are the front-runners for coach of the year. Well, I have another name for you:

How about Bill Self of Kansas?

After a start that had everyone wringing hands and losing sleep, Self has guided his team past the toddler stage and has Kansas looking like a solid tourney team and a threat. The Jayhawks do not have go-to guys, but they do have great balance and guys who can take over for stretches.

More important, the Jayhawks defend. Kansas is holding opponents under 40 percent from the field, which leads the Big 12 and is among the best in the nation.

More and more of the big media folk are starting to notice KU. We’re still young enough that I don’t feel comfortable removing the plastic, urine-proof matress cover from the proverbial bed, I feel pretty good about this team’s chances 4 weeks from now.

Kansas: The Jayhawks are rolling. They swept through Nebraska on the road and Iowa State at home to stay within one game of first-place Texas in the Big 12. Kansas once had the look of a bubble team and now is looking at a high NCAA seed. Bill Self has done his best coaching job in his brief KU tenure.

After two more wins in the next week, we’ll be 10-0 over our last 10 and people will start trumping up the matchup with Texas.

Whitlock Gushes About the Jayhawks

The KC Star’s much-maligned Jason Whitlock may have finally gotten over his love affair with Roy Williams. It appears that the baby Jayhawks have warmed his icy heart, and he couldn’t help but give ‘em some love. In his recent editorial, Jayhawks Will Elevate the Big 12, he gushes:

“Yes, I called the six-loss Jayhawks national-title contenders. And I’m not overreacting to Monday’s thumping of the awful Texas Tech Red Raiders. Kansas has played one bad game - a home loss to Kansas State - since losing to St. Joseph’s on Dec. 6.”

Whitlock also prognosticates that KU may raise the Big 12 to the level of ‘power conference,’ rivaling the Big 10 - and do it this season.
