Tyrell Reed Chooses KU

KU was a dark horse for a Reed, who I thought would choose UNC. The Kirk Hinrich syndrome is in full effect with Reed…he’s definitely under rated because he’s a shocky, white midwesterner.

LAWRENCE - Burlington point guard Tyrel Reed will sign a letter of intent to play basketball at Kansas this afternoon during a news conference at the high school.

Reed, an All-State player last season, is rated as the 14th-best point guard among high school seniors by Rivals.com and a top 100 player overall.

Reed said last month that his list of schools had narrowed to KU, Stanford, North Carolina, Boston College, Oklahoma and Missouri.

This is a good pickup and he’ll be a fine player for KU.

List of KU Recruits for 2007

The LJW compiled a fine list yesterday. It’s here today if you missed it. Definitely check out the whole article for the rest of the story:

Derrick Rose, 6-4, G, Simeon High, Chicago: Rivals.com’s No. 3-rated player, has a list of KU, Illinois, Arizona, Indiana, Michigan State, North Carolina and others. The country’s No. 8-rated player, Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, says his goal this summer is to convince Rose to join him at Illinois.

Jerryd Bayless, 6-3, G, St. Mary’s High, Phoenix: Bayless, who asked out of his oral commitment to Arizona, still is considering UA as well as KU, North Carolina and Texas. He’s the country’s No. 9-rated player.

Kyle Singler, 6-8, F, South Medford High, Medford, Ore.: Ranked No. 6 overall, Singler has KU, Duke, UCLA and Washington on his list. Singler played well for the U.S. Under 18 national team last month.

Anthony Randolph, 6-10, F, Woodrow Wilson High, Dallas: The country’s No. 7-rated player, who has been compared to Chris Bosh and LaMarcus Aldridge, has a list of KU, Duke, Texas, UConn, Memphis, Illinois, Baylor, Georgetown and UCLA.

James Anderson, 6-5, G/F, Junction City (Ark.) High: The country’s No. 64-rated player has a list of KU, Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, UConn, Florida, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

Tyrel Reed, 6-3, G, Burlington: The No. 58-rated player out of the small Kansas town still has a lengthy list, including KU, K-State, North Carolina, Purdue, Wichita State, Illinois, Missouri State, Iowa and Baylor.

P’Allen Stinnett, 6-3, G, Brewster Academy, New Hampshire: Originally from Las Vegas, the country’s No. 77-rated player has a list of KU, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Iowa State, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas.

George Goode, 6-8, Raytown (Mo.) South: The country’s No. 78-rated player has received some interest from KU, K-State, Iowa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Marquette, Florida, Baylor and others.

Tyrone Shelley, 6-6, Crawford High, San Diego: The country’s No. 47-rated player, who scored 76 points in three quarters of a game last season, likes Washington, Arizona, KU, UConn, Illinois, Boston College, UCLA and Oklahoma State.

Isaiah Rusher, 6-8, Bellaire High, Houston: The country’s No. 147-rated player likes LSU, KU, Oklahoma, Florida and UConn.

Good Tyrel Reed Article

Most of you have probably already seen this Star article, but you should probably check it out. I think a lot of people are skeptical because Reed is from Burlington and looks a bit shocky. Reed’s definitely the real deal and I would be pretty upset if we aren’t able to pull the best talent out of Kansas. From what I understand, it’s between us and UNC. I’d probably give the nod to them at present, but my opinion matters little in this sort of thing:

“The thing I really like about him is that he’s got his head screwed on straight,” said Martin, whose final team in 2003-04 with Reed as a freshman went undefeated and won the Kansas Class 3A crown. “His work ethic is relentless, and he’s brought a little prestige to people that have lived here their whole lives.”

I would really like to get a commitment from him. Don’t worry about his ranking, he’s almost exactly where Hinrich was when we picked him up.

Jayhawk Invitational Thoughts

I was away this weekend, so I didn’t get to check out any of the games, but I was pleased to hear Travis Releford enjoyed his time here:

“I like the lights and the fans,” Releford said. “There’s a whole lot of people giving me hype.”

I think we’ve got a really good shot at Releford for 2008. We’re closed and very tied in with him, and we should have some vacancies.

I’m a little concerned to hear that Cole Aldrich continues to struggle with injuries. He had a stress fracture earlier in the year which nearly caused him to miss most of last season, and he’s having foot issues now. Additionally, he had to be hospitalized for bruised ribs.

Hopefully, his frame will get a bit stronger so this isn’t a lingering issue moving forward.

Tyrel Reed also played this weekend, drawing yet more comparisons between himself and former Jayhawk great, Kirk Hinrich. I’d love to hear impressions from anybody that was lucky enough to attend the event.

Oh, and a belated Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who read the Phog Blog.
